MORNING HEADLINES | S.C. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette today is expected to get a big endorsement in an effort to break away from a pack of Republicans who want to be the state’s next governor. That endorsement will come from term-limited S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster.
A video shared with the Associated Press that is to be released today in a joint appearance is said to highlight McMaster saying Evette has been his political partner for two terms in the effort to make South Carolina “the best place to live, work and raise a family.”
McMaster, who has used primary endorsements sparingly throughout his long political career, is said to have added, “With Pamela Evette as our next governor, we’ll keep winning.”
Evette, a 58-year-old Republican businesswoman who was little known when she emerged in 2018 as McMaster’s running mate, is competing with two members of Congress (Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman), the state’s attorney general (Alan Wilson) and a state senator (Josh Kimbrell).
Filing for the office will be in March. The primary is in June. Democrats running for governor include S.C. Rep. Jermaine Johnson of Richland County and Charleston lawyer Mullins McLeod.
