MORNING HEADLINES | California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who’s widely expected to seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2028, is in South Carolina today promoting his soon-to-be-released memoir “Young Man in a Hurry.”
After a private book-signing session this morning at Buxton Books, Newsom is expected to stop in Berkeley and Clarendon counties before a speaking event at Rock Hill’s McGirt Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.
The S.C. visit is Newsom’s second to the early primary state in the past six months. Other rumored 2028 Democratic presidential contenders to schedule time in the Palmetto State have included U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna of California and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
In addition to signing books, Newsom, who’s currently polling at or near the top of the pack of Democratic hopefuls, plans to “meet with South Carolina Democrats for informal conversations about leadership [and] public service” during his Monday visit, according to a release from the South Carolina Democratic Party.
The book promotion is part of what one national publication has dubbed Newsom’s “red state reading tour,” a series of events in places like Nashville, Atlanta and other points South. And that’s no accident, as Newsom’s political adviser Lindsey Cobia told Politico last week.
“It is very much on purpose to not start with the typical New York, D.C., Philly [stops],” Cobia said. “We are being quite intentional in going into red states first.”
