Common sense, please
A Mount Pleasant man on July 17 told town police he accidentally started a fire after wrapping his lit cigarette in paper, tucked it into a brown paper bag and dropped it on the sidewalk near Long Grove Drive. Officers cited him for the littering — but apparently let him off with a warning for the baby arson. As if it isn’t hot enough outside already, man!
Signs of a recession
North Charleston police on July 23 arrested an Illinois man hiding in a forest near a Baptist church in connection with a days-old credit union robbery. The man was reportedly living in a tent in the woods and attempted to disguise his appearance by shaving his beard off after the robbery. Guess robbing a bank isn’t even enough to afford a decent house anymore.
Understandable, but illegal
A downtown man on July 13 reportedly busted out a woman’s car mirror after she “stole his parking spot” on Church Street. According to a police report, the man shouted at her through her shut window, punched the mirror repeatedly, then walked to the front of her car and punched it a few more times before driving off in his own car. Police were unable to find him.
Not actually better
A North Charleston woman on July 19 told officers she was sitting in the backseat of a car after they pulled the driver over for suspected driving under the influence. When police found several empty cans of beer in the back, she said she “changed her mind,” and was actually in the front — where they found more beer. She was arrested alongside the man she said was the driver, just in case.
‘No hablo’
Charleston police on July 18 stopped a man standing in the roadway on Mary Street after watching him move police barricades to block certain roadways and open others. Police noted the man appeared intoxicated, slurring his words and taking selfies in front of the barricade. But when they tried to talk to him, he muttered, “No hablo,” several times. He was eventually arrested.
One killed in North Charleston shooting
North Charleston police on July 25 responded to a short-term rental space and discovered three victims of a shooting. A boy was killed, and two men and one woman were injured. As of early in the week, no arrests had been made, and no names were released. At press time, the investigation was ongoing.
