It’s a little quiet out there on the open seas — maybe a little too quiet. Eh, it’s been a while (well, actually only a handful of days) since we caused a little panic in regards to hurricane season.

Some may be calmed by the lack of any real storms so far this year, but we’re not. In 2000, the first storm didn’t appear until Aug. 3 (Alberto). By the end of the season, there had been 15 storms, including eight hurricanes. Take a look at this breakdown of previous storm seasons and how they fared after a light June and July:

Year — No. by July 31 — Year total — No. of hurricanes

2004 — 1 storm — 15 total — 9 hurricanes

2002 — 1 storm — 12 total — 4 hurricanes

2001 — 1 storm — 15 total — 9 hurricanes

2000 — 0 storms — 15 total — 8 hurricanes

1999 — 1 storm — 12 total — 8 hurricanes

1998 — 1 storm — 14 total — 10 hurricanes
