Author Daniel J. Crooks Jr. will have 1,200 books available at a charity book launch on Thursday, Aug. 20, for his new offering, Charleston is Burning! Two centuries of fire and flames.

Co-sponsored by the Charleston Fire Department and The History Press, all the proceeds will benefit the Charleston 9 Memorial Fund. The free event will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at 423 King St.

Charleston is Burning! highlights the city’s struggle with devastating fires from the turn of the 18th Century to the creation of the Charleston Fire Department in the 1880s.

The book is filled with stories and first-person accounts of blazes that have literally shaped the landscape of the downtown peninsula.
