John Peterson’s story is like that of most any farmer: generations of his family have toiled on their land, he’s faced economic pressures and borderline bankruptcy, and so on. However, this does not include a period in the ’70s when he encouraged young artists from a nearby college to thrive on his farm. Soon after, he switched over to organic and now his Angelic Organics is thriving. Watch The Real Dirt on Farmer John at the Olde North Charleston Picture House at 7 p.m. on March 13, followed by a discussion with Lowcountry Local First (co-sponsors of the evening). The film has played at Sundance and on PBS’ Independent Lens. You might even see the free-thinking Peterson pair a feather boa with his overalls; this ain’t Old McDonald.
