Joe McGill, a program officer with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, brings attention to historic slave cabins across the state. With a passion for African-American history, McGill relives the past by spending nights in slave cabins to show the importance of preserving these landmarks. These are more than just run-down cabins to McGill; they are a significant part of the “built environment” that occurred many years ago throughout South Carolina.
McGill began his journey on May 8 and will continue his travels to the sites throughout the summer. The history addict and preservation enthusiast will spend his third sleepover in a slave cabin at James Island’s McLeod Plantation on Sat. June 19.
