Downtown music and arts venue the Hippodrome (360 Concord St.) recently announced some changes and events. Andrew Walker, the acting executive director at the Hippodrome since January, announced his resignation at the end of the Piccolo Spoleto season earlier this month. “The business model that I put in place was focused solely on special events and performing arts,” Walker says. “The owner of the Hippodrome [Akim Anastopoulo] decided to bring in a new general manager with a new vision for the venue. I had intended to stay on as director of performing arts and events, but I decided to pursue other opportunities.” Walker is also a local musician and the founder and director of Entropy Arts.
Local music collective Awendaw Green’s head honcho Eddie White also announced he was ending a concert series at the venue. Awendaw Green launched a bi-weekly Awendaw Green at the Hippodrome in April. “A mutual decision was made to re-organize the series and find another downtown venue,” White says. “After much searching, I wasn’t able to find a space that worked and we have moved the remaining shows to Wednesday evening Barn Jams [in Awendaw], and may do an occasional downtown show at the Circular Church.”

Green will be working with local agent Rob Lamble to co-produce the next Hippodrome concert, an event featuring bluegrass/folk string player and songwriter Sarah Jarosz on Sat. July 14 at 8 p.m. Jarosz made her Charleston debut last spring during Spoleto Festival USA’s Wells Fargo Jazz Series. She and her combo return behind an album titled Follow Me Down (Sugar Hill).
