Local hip-hop trio Savage Souls dropped a new video this week for “Mad Men,” a track off the Sword Gang EP.
After getting booted from their first location mid-video by the Charleston PD, the guys decided to build a green screen studio at Red Jesus Studios, a.k.a. the home of the group’s Kae G The Original Seed.
“I wanted to go outside anything I had ever done or was comfortable with, at least in scope,” Kae says. “So thinking thematically, the treatment for a song called “Mad Men” was set in an insane asylum from its inception a few months ago. It of course morphed a little here and there as it all came together, and a bit of a narrative developed which I hope plays to the viewer.”
In the narrative, the group utilized “Holy City Hip-Hop Committee members” in thematic roles rather than giving them hand-waving cameos. For example, rapper and videographer Damn Skippy (a.ka. Alexander Veazey) plays a doctor, rapper the Bad Mojo (a.k.a. Maurice O’Clock, “5:AM on Folly”) and Remo Williams (producer, Savage Souls’ “Our Time,” “Shots Fired”) are patients, Coffin Syrup’s Big Gore is a psychologist, rapper Apollo Valdez and local DJ Luis Skye (host of Savage Saturday Live) are orderlies, and R&B singer Corey Bonneau is the security guard.
“The video itself carries much more of a story than the song itself but at the same time the visual lend to the sound of the track,” Kae says.
Kae directed, edited, and shot the video for his new company Seven30 Video Production with the help of Veazey (Alexander Veazy Videography) and Dwayne Johnson, while Kae, Fortune the Iron Mic Mangler (Savage Souls), and Jennifer Da PirateNinja produced “Mad Men.”
