James Island bar/restaurant Bar George will turn into an old-school Italian eatery for one night only on Sunday. Lupara pop-up owners Mason Morton and James Ostop, who now helm the pint-sized Bar George kitchen, will team up with new pizza pop-up Big Tent to serve lasagna, tagliatelle with clams, spaghetti and meatballs, pizza, eggplant parmesan and more starting at 5 p.m.
“We’re going to pull out the red and white checkered tablecloth and stuff like that,” said Morton, who debuted Lupara with Ostop at Cutty’s in February. “The kitchen at Cutty’s was operational, but the Bar George kitchen is definitely a step up in terms of what you can do.”
Lupara has been on a hiatus since spring when Morton took over Bar George executive chef duties, allowing Bar George co-owner Alex Lira to spend more time at Estadio, where he serves as executive chef. Shortly after, Ostop joined Morton at Bar George, reuniting the chefs who became friends while working in the kitchen at The Ordinary.
According to Morton and Ostop, the idea for the Sunday pop-up came up one night at Bar George when Big Tent co-owner Corey Phillips, who has spent time at several Charleston restaurants, including Pancito & Lefty and Xiao Bao Biscuit, stopped by Bar George for drinks.
“[Big Tent is] going to have their truck out here, and we’ll be doing a pretty pasta-focused menu out of the kitchen at Bar George,” Morton said.
Expect classic Italian cocktails and Italian wines to pair with the affordable offering at the pop-up, which is open to the public from 5 p.m. until they sell out. Morton and Ostop hope to host more Lupara nights at Bar George moving forward, they said.
