GrowFood Carolina’s annual Mushroom Gathering is going virtual, with three-course mushroom-themed meals available for pick-up at its warehouse Wednesday, Oct. 28. The list of participating chefs includes Mike Lata, BJ Dennis and Cynthia Wong, among others.
GrowFood Carolina hosts the Mushroom Gathering each year to celebrate the 2014 passing of state regulations allowing foragers to sell to distributors.
“The Coastal Conservation League, in collaboration with us, DHEC and Mushroom Mountain’s Tradd Cotter came together at that point and figured out a way to make a change to that law to make a certification process around foraged mushrooms,” said GrowFood Carolina general manager Anthony Mirisciotta.
S.C. foragers can now become certified foragers by taking a class put on by Mushroom Mountain, located near Greenville. Nearly 1,000 people have become certified foragers at Mushroom Mountain since 2014, Mirisciotta said.
In years past, the Mushroom Gathering has taken place at GrowFood’s Morrison Drive warehouse, but Mirisciotta said they didn’t feel comfortable hosting an in-person event this year.
“I knew that I wanted to continue to celebrate the mushroom, and I started playing around with ideas,” Mirisciotta said. “Chef Mike Lata came to the warehouse one day when I was knee deep in thinking about this, and we finally came up with what we’re offering.”
Here’s how it works — choose one of two three-course meal options that feature an appetizer, entree and dessert. Select a pick-up time and grab your meal at GrowFood’s downtown warehouse, located at 990 Morrison Drive.
Mirisciotta said a link to a short video with clips of the foragers and chefs explaining the meals will be sent out via email the day of the virtual event.
