TOYS IN THE ATTIC

“Even an asshole rock club should do their part!” exclaims Cumberland’s booking guy Johnny Puke. He and the venue arranged a special three-day “Toys for Tots” event for this weekend, with live performances from The Fire Apes and A Decent Animal on Fri. Dec. 16, Sol Driven Train on Sat. Dec. 17, and Genrevolta with Motormouth Mabel (who are set to release a new 7″ EP titled Catch the Fury) and special guests on Sun. Dec. 18. Folks can gain admittance with a donation of a new, unopened, unwrapped toy (or a $10 donation). “These shows are our chance to give back to the community,” says Puke. “The majority of the door money will benefit Toys for Tots as well.” Check out www.cumberlands.net for more.

JAZZ CAT DONE GOOD

This weekend’s show at the Pour House might be a good time to bid guitarist Clay Ross good luck before he leaves for the Balkans this week to play in Greece, Turkey, Macedonia, and Serbia through the Jazz Ambassadors Program. His new jazz album The Random Puller is available now at 52.5 Records, Millennium Music, and online at www.clayross.com (see p. 61).

H20

Booked solidly through the holiday and into ’06, the Pour House has a few events of note coming up, including the “Hydration Vibration: A Helping Hand for the Mother Land” benefit show scheduled for Sun. Dec. 18, with live music from The Key of Q, Graham Whorley, and The JP Allstars. Cosponsored by Domain Magazine, the club will offer some major beer specials through the night. A $10 donation is asked at the door. Proceeds benefit the efforts to pipe fresh water to the Bifal tribe in Senegal, Africa. See www.charlestonpourhouse.com for more details.

YUK YUK

Good luck to 96 Wave’s sharp-minded Kenny Z and all the brave stand-up comics participating at the “Comedy Free” event at the Windjammer on Fri. Dec. 16. Admission is $5 and a can (or more) of food. Proceeds benefit the Lowcountry Food Bank. Check www.96wave.com for more.
