THE PIG WINS!
Chain Store Age magazine has named Kiawah’s Newton Farms supermarket, owned by Piggly Wiggly Carolina, Inc., Retail Store of the Year for best design. The quaint general store-esque design beat out entries received from all over the country, as well as Europe. The store is located in the mini shopping area Freshfields Village, at the crossroad between Kiawah and Seabrook islands. All winners will be honored on Feb. 25 at a dinner in Orlando. —Kinsey Labberton
SLICIN’ IT UP
Walk away with two balls in a sack from the new Calhoun Street pizzeria Slices by Doriano. Balls made of deep-fried rice, peas, meat, and pepper arancini are just one of Pasquale Doriano’s specialties at Slices. Doriano is no stranger to the peninsula food and beverage scene. “I’ve owned over 12 restaurants and I swear I’ve fed every college student and bum in Charleston,” he says. Slices is located in the former Bogota’s Coffee Shop location, at 151 Calhoun St. (across from the Francis Marion Hotel), and should benefit from plenty of CofC student foot traffic (and from the recent demise of Sharky’s on King Street). Doriano’s jovial and generous attitude won’t hurt either because, he says, “I don’t like to just throw food away at the end of the night, so I always just give the bums any extra I have.” We can already hear three cheers echoing from the homeless. With Slices by Doriano’s delicious gourmet pizza, it looks like everyone will be eating like kings. —KL
JAMES GETS A CHICK
Fifty-two free value meals could be yours! According to Chick-Fil-A headquarters representative Marilyn Gunter, James Island is set to get a new Chick-Fil-A on June 29. Since people have been known to drive from out of state to attend new Chick-Fil-A openings, those looking to to qualify for the year’s supply of free Value Meals by being one of the first 100 customers in the door may want to consider queuing up before construction even breaks ground. Gunter could neither confirm nor deny rumors that the fast food joint will be opening across from Blockbuster Video on Folly Road, in the spot where Buffalo South once stood. The only sure promise is that islanders can expect chicken satisfaction before summer’s in full effect. All we hope for is a bag or two of hot chicken sandwiches, which they brought by our offices when they opened a location in Summerville last year. —KL
