Avondale Station
Caribbean/Creole/Cuban
Entrées $5-$10
West Ashley. 828 Savannah Hwy. 377-1300
Dinner
Avondale Station is a fun addition to the hip Magnolia Drive/Hwy. 17 area of West Ashley, which has long been home to Gene’s Haufbrau and, more recently, Al di La. The renovated auto garage, which kept the big bay doors and open feel, fills the center of the Avondale neighborhood with approachable Cuban food — the empanadas are particularly good. A festive bar atmosphere provides pleasant outdoor drinking and dining, and the location is convenient to many areas of town.

El Bohio
Cuban/Caribbean
Entrées $5-$10
James Island. 1977 Maybank Hwy. 571-4343
Lunch and Dinner
Don’t be put off by El Bohio’s status as the restaurant part of the Pour House, a happening music venue on James Island. Instead, be delighted by the discovery of perfectly pressed Cuban sandwiches and piping hot empanadas and croquetas. There’s good value here, too, in addition to a huge variety of beers on tap.

Vickery’s
Caribbean/Creole/Cuban
Entrées $5-$10
Downtown. 15 Beaufain St. 577-5300; Mt. Pleasant. 1313 Shrimp Boat Lane. 884-4440
Lunch and Dinner
You can never go wrong with a trip to Vickery’s. Black bean cakes and the turkey and brie sandwich are favorites for lighter diners, and there are plenty of burgers and fried stuff for those interested in junk-food snacking. It’s one of the few places to dine outside in the shade downtown, and the Shem Creek location has a gorgeous view of the water.
