Bullish onBull Street
Neighborhood regulars at the Bull Street Gourmet can’t help noticing the dwindling inventory and increasing absence of charismatic owner Michele Ghastin. Recently, real estate hunters have seen the property listed for sale on the Multiple Listings Service. Rumors have now been confirmed; the shop — which serves a lovely lunch and in the past has carried an excellent selection of wines — has been sold. Ghastin closed the sale with John Hughes Cooper this week. Justin Foxhall, formerly of Rue de Jean, will manage the transitioning corner shop. Plans in the works include an expanded breakfast menu and increasing the number of tables inside. The entire building will be getting a makeover with an industrial range and hood for the kitchen and a luxurious upgrade to the two upstairs apartments. —EL

Food for Thought
Charitable dinners and the efforts that they support are a great way to spend an evening. They are made even better if the cause seeks to improve the food itself. Such was the case at the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association‘s fund-raising dinner held May 21 at Carolina’s. The nine-course tasting menu, executed by Chef Tin Dizdarevic, showcased the locally grown, organic production of member farms in the Charleston area; the fish was so fresh, it was delivered live to the restaurant. Each delicious course came with a thorough explanation of its ties to the land — proving that, with the right approach, the Lowcountry can grow some darn good food and Chef Dizdarevic knows how to cook it.
