“I grew up in Huger, in the Wando area on the outskirts of Mt. Pleasant, and went to school in Florence, S.C., at Francis Marion University. I originally studied elementary education, but after sitting a semester out, my mom suggested that I go to cosmetology school. Ever since I was a little child, I was always braiding or doing something with hair. So I went, and I’ve been doing it ever since. That was 12 years ago.

“I moved back here two and a half years ago from North Carolina. There I once did a wedding with nine bridesmaids and the bride, plus her mother. Since I’ve been here my clientele has really grown. I set my own schedule, which is great. I am also a licensed cosmetology instructor. I don’t teach now, but I could.

“The area known as Daniel Island used to be basically trees and totally country. Now’s it’s like a little city. I have clients from there, Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley, and a few from downtown. When I first moved here I had some of my clients from North Carolina who worked for the airlines. Because they could fly free and loved having me do their hair, they would fly down here on the weekends.

“Right now I rent, but eventually I would like to expand to have a day spa, hopefully in Mt. Pleasant. Now a version of the mohawk is in and anything with a lot of movement, like razor cutting for longer hair.

“I do everything: hair, make-up, eyebrows — counseling. My favorite is when people come in and they don’t have a haircut in mind, and I talk them into a certain cut. The look on their faces when they see the transformation, when they realize the difference a haircut can make, I love that.” —as told to Lynsy Smithson Stanley
