Have you ever played the word association game? Someone says “hot,” you think “cold.” What’s the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the word “Charleston”? That’s what the Greenville Forward nonprofit organization asked 1,900 local college students. The survey also asked for reactions to “Spartanburg,” “Columbia,” and “Greenville.” The most popular responses for Columbia were “dirty,” and “hot” — “armpit” was the fragrant answer from 40 respondents. “Small” and “boring” were the most popular responses for Spartanburg, while Greenville is considered “growing” and “nice.”
