The Hispanic population is seeing strong growth in South Carolina, according to recent U.S. Census estimates of states, counties, and larger cities. The immigrant population is following jobs, says Virginia Benmaman, head of the College of Charleston’s bilingual interpreting program. Though Charleston and Berkeley counties appear to be falling behind the state average of 42 percent, Benmaman says the estimates likely fall short of reality. “We don’t know how many are here illegally,” she says. Census officials note that mid-decade estimates indicate trends rather then actual population numbers.
