Filing for special GOP Senate primary opens for a week

MORNING HEADLINES | Filing for the special Republican primary for a U.S. Senate nominee to replace the late U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham opens at noon today for a week. Among those who have said they are running are his sister Darline, who was appointed to hold the seat until January, and U.S. Reps. Ralph Norman and Russell Fry.

Other expected candidates in the GOP primary include businessman Mark Lynch, who came in second in a June primary to Graham, and Duke Buckner, while a recent filing suggests a run from former S.C. governor and U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford may be on the horizon.

U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, announced Monday she will not be running in the special primary election. Mace, like Norman, unsuccessfully ran for South Carolina governor in June, finishing fifth in the Republican primary.

The statewide special primary for the special GOP Senate primary is scheduled for Aug. 11. Early voting for the special primary is set for Aug. 5 to Aug. 7. The deadline for absentee ballots is July 31.

The Republican nominee will advance to the November general election to face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, along with Libertarian candidate Kasie Whitener, Constitution Party candidate Mark Hackett and other third-party candidates.
