FALL ARTS PREVIEW

Itโ€™s as regular an occurrence as the change of seasons, and โ€” in the Lowcountry, anyway โ€” a lot more entertaining. Each year, Charleston performing arts groups go into a summertime hibernation following Spoleto and Piccolo festivals, then wake up at the start of fall refreshed, revivified, and ready to burst onto the Charleston cultural scene like a creative Big Bang. And so each year at this time, as season brochures arrive in mailboxes everywhere and arts groups are planning gala season openers all over the place, we publish our Fall Arts Preview. Itโ€™s a guide to the best of whatโ€™s going on around town between now and January, including helpful overviews of the big season schedules from local theatre companies and the Charleston Symphony, compiled by City Paper critics who know of what they speak.

We also traditionally raise a flag for local artists making a name for themselves in the Charleston scene by running short profiles of them โ€” our Ones To Watch. This year, weโ€™ve spotlighted musicians like the very busy Nathan Koci, Cabaret Kiki member and founder of the New Music Collective; filmmakers like Charleston Documentary Film Festival creator Justin Nathanson; artists and gallery owners like Currie McCullough, whose 53 Cannon St. Gallery is opening eyes in the West Side; and actors like Henry Riggs, the 20-year-old writer-director-star of Hobo: The Musical.

So flip through and enjoy. With our Criticsโ€™ Picks, weโ€™ve singled out a handful of the shows weโ€™re most looking forward to in the coming months, but thereโ€™s a lot more culture going on than we can jam into 96 pages. Check out a complete listing of this fallโ€™s offerings at www.charlestoncitypaper.com. Weโ€™ll see you in the audience.
