Inducted into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame in 1995, The Catalinas have remained one of the more popular beach music and shag dance acts in the Carolinas. One of their earliest hits – 1967’s “You Haven’t The Right” – is still a crowd favorite. The ensemble, clad in their sharp, beachside uniforms, hit the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina Heritage Stage at 3:15 p.m.
The public began associating The Catalinas – led by longtime vocalist/guitarist Gary Barker – with summer and the Myrtle Beach Pavilion in 1975, when the group released the 7-inch single “Summertime’s Calling Me.” In 1980, they followed with a full-length album with the same title, which included single releases of “Dancin’-Romancin’,” “Facts of Love,” and a remake of “You Haven’t The Right.”
These days, Barker is joined on stage by Barry Duke (lead vocals and sax), Jeppy White (vocals and trombone), Bob Nantz (vocals and trumpet), Ronnie Gittens (vocals and keyboards), Bruce Flynn (drums), and Ed Mann (vocals and bass). Their latest recording effort is The Catalinas Anthology, which includes recordings from back in the early 1960s all the way up to present. – T. Ballard Lesemann
