Gold’s Gym was born in California in 1965 and it’s now the largest co-ed gym chain in the world. Arnold Schwarzenegger made it famous in Pumping Iron. Calling itself the “Mecca of body building,” Gold’s Gym has over 40 years of serious fitness experience. Most facilities are about as big as Texas, making room for their three million members encompassing 43 states and 25 countries. Why is it so popular? Running is boring outdoors where it’s free. Don’t kid yourself. Get on an elliptical. Turn your legs in circles and press play on the ol’ iPod. Watch some television. Get in shape and read grocery store magazines. Stare at everyone as they squat and sweat and count to themselves. There’s a smorgasbord of cardio machines, medicine balls, televisions, and lots of heavy weights. Daycare is available. Memberships are affordable, but you have to sign a year contract. It’s a big commitment. Think you’re ready? —Lindsay Sainlar
