Kickin’ Chicken

James Island. 1175 Folly Road. 225-6996

At present, there are four Kickin’ Chicken locations in the Charleston area — and all four stay busy with a dedicated clientele of neighborhood regulars. Proprietors Bobby Perry and Chip Roberts (old classmates from USC) opened the first version of the Chicken downtown in 1997. The James Island location — halfway down Folly Road from downtown to Folly Beach — opened in 2002 with a full menu of wings, sandwiches, apps, and entrees. The beer selection is respectable, but the cheap buckets of PBR and domestic pints are most popular. The live jam-rock, jazz, bluegrass, and cover band action help keep this place high in the standings as Best James Island Bar.
