Saddam Hangs

The News Story category had three stories vying for the trophy this year that (in one way or another) have won before. The final demolition of the old Cooper River bridges and the Democratic thumpin’ in November were significant stories. But nothing could beat the eternal soap opera that is Iraq. Even if you tried your hardest, you likely couldn’t avoid the pictures or video of Saddam swinging. The Iraqi devil’s end did little to stop the violence there, but it provided one of the more dramatic chapters in a saga we’re sure to see in these pages again. —Greg Hambrick
