Is Sunday brunch not the best meal of the week? Does it not make you feel like a rich, aristocratic hunter or something to wake up late, put on your breeches, and head to the nearest high-end restaurant for a plate of perfectly poached eggs drizzled in a fatteningly delicious hollandaise sauce? Well, maybe every joint serving a late breakfast on Sunday won’t make you feel like a fox hunter, but High Cotton sure will.
The Maverick Group’s chop house on East Bay Street opens to big crowds on Sunday. The setting seems perfect for the meal — lazily spinning fans, heart pine floors, big round tables and high-backed chairs, exposed brick walls, and wood-slatted blinds. You feel as if you’re on the side porch with servants tending to you hand and foot. The cocktail menu gets you started right with drinks like the Old South Martini (Maker’s Mark, Southern Comfort, OJ, and mint) alongside Bloody Marys and Mimosas. Entrées feature a Southern spin on the classics, like a Maverick Eggs Benedict where a buttermilk biscuit is topped with ham, red eye gravy, a poached egg, and hollandaise sauce. Or you could go for a sweet concoction like the French toast stuffed with white chocolate cream cheese and smothered in strawberry sabayon and whipped cream and served with apple smoked bacon. Oh gawd. That sounds so good, doesn’t it? No wonder High Cotton came up big this year in a category that’s one of the most hotly contested.
