The Smoking Lamp

Downtown. 189 East Bay St. 577-7339

Charleston City Council’s recent decision to ban smoking in workplaces has little impact on The Smoking Lamp since the ordinance allows smoking in tobacco shops. But the problem is that, while the shop wasn’t put out of business, the city built a wall in front of potential expansion plans. Both The Smoking Lamp and Kingston Tobacco, another local shop, joined a suit filed against the city by local bar A.C.’s Bar & Grill because they have dreams of expanding their businesses to include food and drinks. While the city’s new smoking ban could make such a business even more lucrative because of the exclusivity that cigar bars will now have as the lone smoking establishments, the ordinance prohibits the establishment of any new cigar bars. Currently there is only one, Club Habana, and that monopoly is one of the sticking points for the two tobacco shops. The plaintiffs are hopeful that one day they can vie for the title of Best Cigar Bar, too.
