A while back, I noted a column in a Rhode Island paper claiming that Charleston was dead and that Providence was the new cat’s meow. Well, while I just gripe and moan, Richard Jerue is taking care of business.
Charleston is one of America’s most livable cities. Its historic district is strikingly beautiful and second to none in historic preservation. It has a talented and growing arts community and an extraordinary hospitality community.
If you live in Charleston, you can be at the beach in 15 minutes. That does indeed attract young people and young families to the city, despite Mr. Schenck’s assertion to the contrary. And people in Charleston don’t have to travel three hours to New York or an hour to Boston to experience culture and history. We have it here, right at home.
Further, you can’t find a nicer place for gracious hospitality. Don’t mistake laid-back civility and “living is easy” with being “corpse-like.”
