We’re always looking for a cool pace to hang out and drink wine. If you haven’t been over to Avondale Wine and Cheese, I have to say you’re missing out. I stumbled onto this place a couple of months ago (probably because I live a stone’s throw away), but sure am glad I did – I think that Manoli Davani, the shop’s owner has possibly created the blueprint for the future of small wine shops in Charleston. It’s as much a local hang-out as a stuffy wine shop.

She has some serious wine in there and she doesn’t mind sharing a taste or two. If you are looking for big bottle of plonk, don’t bother. This shop is about real wine and will not appeal to chumps looking for a cheap buzz. She also has cheese – good cheese – cheese that will make you swoon, all kinds, from stinky to surgically crisp. And she has bread sometimes, and dried sausages, interesting gourmet teas and coffee, locally produced fruit preserves, even some of Ciaran Duffy’s new chocolate BBQ sauce that he slathers on those delectable lamb ribs over at Tristan.

Did I say this was a wine shop? It’s more. They have a café menu of sandwiches and such and a cool little tea room in the back with a plush couch and radiant vibe. Subscribe to the email alerts and you can catch the frequent tastings – quality tasting usually conducted by local distributors. If nothing else, you can kick back and enjoy some tasty juice. See you there.
