AVANT-ROCK | The Nein
w/ All Get Out
Thurs. May 3
The Map Room
$5
North Carolina indie nerds, krautrock revivalists, or ambitious sonic explorers? Maybe a bit of all three? Durham-based rock quartet The Nein โ bassist/keyboardist Josh Carpenter, drummer/keyboardist Robert Biggers, guitarist/keyboardist Finn Cohen, and guitarist/tape manipulator Dale Flattum โ are definitely into something unusual. The band formed in 2003 under the guidance of Biggers and Cohen (both formerly of The White Octave) and released two independent EPs before signing to the Canadian label Sonic Unyon in 2005. Things sounded angular and accented on the 2006 six song EP Transitionalisms. Their latest collection, a full-length album titled Luxury, detours even further from the norm with more samples, beats, โfound sounds interspersed with simple acoustic melodies and repetitive phrases.โ Ja oder nein โฆ ja und nein. Either way. See www.sonicunyon.com/thenein and www.thenein.com for more. โT. Ballard Lesemann THURSDAY

CLASSIC ROCK | Chicago

$69.50, $49.50
2007 is a big year for veteran pop/rock band Chicago, who celebrate their 40th anniversary this season with a national tour and a new studio album titled Chicago XXX (Rhino). Although thereโs no sign of longtime singer/bassist Peter Cetera or original drummer Danny Seraphine, the current lineup includes the original horn section โ reed player Walt Parazaider, trumpeter Lee Loughnane, trombonist James Pankow โ and organist Robert Lamm along with relative newbies Jason Scheff, Keith Howland, Bill Champlin, and Tris Imboden. They know your love was meant to be โฆthe kind of love that lasts forever. And they want you here with them from tonight until the end of time. You should know, everywhere they go, youโre always on their mind, in their heart, in their soul. Baby, youโre the meaning in their life. Youโre the inspiration. ACOUSTIC | โOpen Mic Nightโ
w/ Karl Shuman
Tues. May 8
Windjammer
Free
Local musician and Windjammer staffer Karl Shuman is happy to announce the kick-off of a summer-long, weekly โOpen Mic Nightโ series to take place on the Jammerโs stage every Tuesday starting May 8. โI started this at the Windjammer several years ago and it has taken off over the past couple years with some incredible talent,โ says the host. A sign up sheet goes up at 9 p.m. and the music begins at 10 p.m. Performers must bring their own instruments (no full drum kits, but hand percussion is fine). All styles are welcome. โNormally, I start the night off with a few tunes, work the crowd a bit, and explain what the night entails. Normally everyone gets to play three to five songs. If the crowd is into a particular act, I try to give them a few more. I usually have time for about 10 acts. Every so often, we are graced by some big names paying a visit โ guys from Cowboy Mouth, Sister Hazel, and Kevn Kinney, for example. Thereโs a lot of great talent out there and itโs a great way for newcomers to get over the normal fears of performing on a stage and dealing with stage fright.โ See www.the-windjammer.com for more. โTBL TUESDAY
