Ever wonder what happens to all those animals in the wild that are too hurt to survive on their own? Yeah, we don’t like to dwell on it too much. It’s not pretty. But thanks to the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary Hospital in Florida, some 5,000 animals are taken in each year, rehabilitated, and set free again. For the ones that can’t make it out in the wild on their own, the Sanctuary becomes their permanent home.
If you like seeing wild animals up close and personal, although not too up close and personal in the case of the more bitey ones, you may want to swing by one of the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary Animal Shows over the course of SEWE’s three days. And while looking at the animals is all well and good (as opposed to talking to them which is a little crazy), there’s also a point to the parade of critters: Educating the public about what they can do to reduce the number of injuries to wild animals.
This year, you can expect to see plenty of smelly skunks, slithering snakes, regal eagles, and ready-to-swoop-down-and-pick-up-a-field mouse hawks. Also, you can peer inside the pouch of a mama possum, learn the difference between Florida alligators and African crocodiles, and hear strange stories about the elusive wildebeest-hunting Shih Tzu. (We’re joking about that last bit.) So if you love animals and want to learn more about how to keep them out of harm’s way — well, as much as possible; it’s a dangerous world out there, you know — this is a show you don’t want to miss. Just watch out for toy dogs in pink camo.
