Last week, news broke that Gov. Mark Sanford had spoken with bidders on the Port of Port Royal site and trashed another potential bidder to members of the Ports Authority.

Now comes word that the owner of the company and his wife donated to Sanford’s campaign. Waiting for the shocking news? Keep waiting. That’s no surprise.

While I’m sure Sanford appreciated the money, he wasn’t hard up for cash. The only question is if he felt responsible to shill for the developer because of the cash. My first inclination is no.

It is likely another step toward a Senate investigation, but the real consequences could come in McCain’s deliberations on a running mate. I’d say the candidate has had enough influence-tinged scandal that he’ll likely avoid it in a running mate.
