When Modernisme closed its doors on Nov. 21, 2007, it was a loss for Charleston’s contemporary artists. While there are plenty of venues to showcase more or less conventional art, spaces that are willing to take a chance on “risky” styles are a minority. Now it’s home to Consigning Women, Modernisme’s former neighbor. Since April of last year, business had slowed considerably, said co-owner Kristy Cifuentes, because of the downturn in the national economy. Businesses in the Avondale area did not grow as quickly as she expected either. With a baby on the way, Cifuentes and her husband, Eddie, decided that closing was the right move. “It was an extremely difficult decision,” Kristy Cifuentes told City Paper in November. “This gallery has been the love of my life. Only now can I talk about it without crying.”
