La Fourchette

432 King St. Downtown.
(843) 722-6261

There are many contenders for this crown, including readers’ pick 39 Rue de Jean, Vickery’s over on Shem Creek (the view helps), Sesame in North Charleston (they make their own ketchup, which wins points for effort), and even a few interlopers from up north like Five Guys Burgers & Fries (lots of peanut oil). But La Fourchette beats them all hands-down. Their pommes frites are hand-cut and fried in duck fat (duck fat!) not once but twice (twice!), the first time at low temperature, the second time higher, ensuring a soft, tender interior and perfectly crisp crust. Dip them in the house-made mayonnaise and, after one bite, you’ll never look at a flash-frozen curly fry again.
