The unflinching Kevin Hackler is one of the standout talents in the scene. A confident trumpeter with a firm handle on different musical styles, he regularly collaborates with the city’s top players. Hackler can play or rework any standard in the book, groove on any unexpected rhythmic turnaround, and jam with wittiness without being too clever. His newly-released, globally-exotic debut album, Absalon, is one of the best original works of 2007.
