Sure, it comes in all fuzzy, depending on the cloud cover and what part of town you’re in (or if you’re driving under a bridge), but the new Rocket 980 (WAZS 980 AM) delivers true rock ‘n’ roll oldies — and they’re the only ones in the Charleston area swingin’ with it all. It’s the rock ‘n’ roll that started out on AM radio. Licensed to Summerville, and owned by Thomas B. Daniels, Rocket 980 says, “Sure, there are a lot of ‘rock’ stations around … but there is only one place to go for the real thing!” The playlist touches on plenty of standards by Elvis, Roy Orbison, Bill Haley & His Comets, The Four Seasons, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin. But they dig a little here and there to feature a deep cut from The Beatles or another British Invasion group or an obscure Motown or beach music hit or a flipside from the early folk-pop scene. It’s hip, Daddy-O. Dig it.
