Bill Hedden was doing a little snorkeling in the murky waters of Lake Moultrie last September when he got a little too close to an alligator. The predator took his arm off and gnawed on it for awhile (as seen in photos famously chronicled by the Post and Courier) before getting caught and meeting its own end. Doctors couldn’t re-attach Hedden’s arm, but he likely owes his life to five nurses who happened to be spending the day by the lake. The women acted quickly to contain the man’s bleeding until emergency crews arrived.
