Carly Simon may no longer be showing up on the cover of Rolling Stone. James Taylor may be bald. And Jackson Browne, well, after those allegations that he slapped Darryl Hannah around hit the press, his career was never quite the same. But while the greats of the singer-songwriter era may have moved on to smaller and more irrelevant things, the people they inspired are still plugging away. And when it comes to Lowcountry S&S’ers, the Sunfire Grill in West Ashley is the place to be. Each Monday evening, a gang of Charleston’s finest songsmiths — Susie Summers, David Owens, Carroll Brown, David Moulton, Ted McKee, and others — gather to tell stories set to music while the good folks in the crowd sip drinks and watch approvingly. You might disagree, but it’s nice to know that folks can listen to live music and have a few drinks (the cheap draft Bud flows during happy hour) and not have to be subjected to yet another cover band, or worse yet, some Panic wannabe.
