Every time I go to Doscher’s IGA on Savannah Highway, I see them — gaggles of soccer players and dodgeball fanatics competing in the arena adjacent to the grocery store. According to the facility’s website, it’s the venue for Arena City Soccer, a co-ed athletic organization. There’s a bunch of teams divided according to age with names like the Land Sharks and House Arrest. They play in all kinds of weather, and there’s plenty of seating for spectators. With the grocery next door, one specializing in what appears to be ethnic foods — stuff like pigs’ feet and a long brown log of mystery meat called “country pudding” — you have the makings of a good night of sports watching. If the country pudding doesn’t whet your whistle, there’s always Andolini’s down the street.
