Momma Brown’s

Good old Momma Brown’s — located at the far end of Ben Sawyer Boulevard, just off of Center Street — seems to be getting better and better each year. Currently, dining room service is very friendly and attentive, the ribs are tender, the Tuesday night catfish is crispy, and the sizeable daily buffet is well-stocked with great veggies, side dishes, and meats. One of the unique aspects of their pit-cooked, pulled-pork barbecue is the presentation of the popular mustard-based (S.C. midlands) and vinegar-based (Western N.C.) styles. Giving the Melvin’s and Bessinger’s a run for their money, Momma’s deeply yellow, surprisingly zesty mustard pork is served pre-mixed on the buffet. Right next to it, unseasoned pulled-pork is presented next to a pot of red and tangy vinegar/pepper sauce (to be ladled by the customer over the pork). Both are awesome — try them side by side on your plate with no debate.
