Charleston has had some success with reality television, including at least one winner, but when the reality TV royalty of American Idol came to town late last year, we saw the best chance for Charleston to show it had the chops. When the episode ran in January, host Ryan Seacrest summed it up in one word: “No.” While much of the episode focused on the bad singers in Charleston, we did send 23 to Hollywood — more than most other cities. Unfortunately it took only one week of audience voting before our only Top 24 contestant, Colton Berry, was out of the running.
