Every visitor to Charleston seems to hit Rainbow Row, the Market, and maybe a ghost tour or carriage ride. They eat at Hyman’s Seafood, ferry out to Fort Sumter, and walk among the grandiose mansions south of Broad Street. Charleston is built on top of a salt marsh — we now know from flooding that it’s not the wisest place to settle, but it makes us special nonetheless.
