Mad about McCain
Sen. John McCain says he supports clean energy, but he was the only lawmaker who didn’t show up the last time the Senate voted on renewable energy tax incentives, which failed to pass by just one vote. I was appalled to learn that McCain was the only senator who chose to skip this crucial vote on the future of clean energy in America.
Now I am even more appalled to learn that this is a pattern with McCain. On the League of Conservation Voters’ scorecard he received a zero for missing the 15 most important environmental votes in 2007. McCain’s LCV score exposes the real record behind the rhetoric: a lifetime pattern of voting with polluters and special interests and ducking the important votes.
It’s no secret that coal-fired power plants are the chief polluter of mercury (and so much more) in our environment. Over 1,700 miles of river in South Carolina have fish with high levels of mercury? So much for the great outdoors.

Picking on the picks
The Best of Charleston 2008 was quite informative, thanks to the critics’ picks. But I was upset at the readers’ picks.
Best Cheap Meal, Moe’s Southwest Grill? Jack’s Cafe is just as cheap and much more tasty. Privately owned, the food is made fresh right in front of you by Jack and is served by the friendly and devoted staff. The shorter hours of business may give it less notoriety, but the food, service and prices make it one of Charleston’s best.
Best Late Night Menu, Waffle House? It’s hard for the readers to vote for a privately owned late-night restaurant because there are so few serving late-night diners, especially in the downtown area. But there is Dave’s Carry Out, a favorite among locals and college students.
Lastly, Best Coffee House, Starbucks? Charleston is filled with wonderful coffee shops like Kudu Cafe, Kennedy’s Bakery and Market, Rutledge Coffee & Cream, as well as others outside of the downtown area. The influx of these chains, especially Starbucks, reflect the growth of this town which is beneficial. But it is a shame that the majority of the readers can’t recognize private businesses that have more character and personality. Their continuity is essential to preserving the culture and character of this town that make it like no other. It seems as if these categories were voted on by tourists and not actual Charlestonians.
