The stretch of Savannah Highway from around the Folly Road intersection to Sam Rittenberg will be the Charleston Nine Memorial Highway.

It’s a terrific and necessary symbolic gesture, but I’m pretty sure people won’t rearrange their internal maps and begin calling it the Charleston Nine — mainly because, as the Post and Courier points out, the stretch already has a healthy batch of names.

What’s likely needed is an even grander display of memorial and thanks.
