What is it? A tribute to one of the great living American composers that lets you experience his work while hearing what he has to say about it.

Why see it? The Piccolo Spoleto Festival Orchestra will perform under the baton of Maestro Donald Portnoy with soprano Deanna McBroom taking up solo duties. On the bill for this performance are Paulus’ Rhapsody for Violin and Orchestra, Erotic Spirits for soprano and orchestra, and the tone poem, Sea Portraits. Paulus will be in attendance to give opening remarks.

Who should go? Those with an interest in modern music should not miss this opportunity. If you’re a bit reticent about modern music, come anyway. Paulus’ works, while informed by the various schools that erupted in the last century, also rest heavily on what came before, and are beautifully tonal.

PICCOLO SPOLETO • $10 • 1 hour 15 min. • June 3, 6 p.m. • New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist Church, 22 Elizabeth St. • (888)
