ART | Spoleto Evolution
Is all this highfalutin Spoleto art making you feel all itchy? We hope not, but if you’re looking for a little change of pace (and to save some moolah), Phillip Hyman’s Evolution is for you. This alternative art and music festival stretches from May 22 to June 7, and includes about 15 shows at various locations around town. The fest kicks off with the Accidental Evil Art Show at Voodoo in West Ashley on May 22 at 8 p.m. The stars of Chucktown’s underground art scene will be in attendance, including John Pundt, Julio Cotto, SHT!, Wolfkid, Ishmael, Scott Debus, Josh Branstetter, and Badjon Photography. DJ D. Rock and Dr. Fuzz spinning records. Later on in the fest, on June 5, the same venue hosts an all-lady art show, featuring the works of Lisa Shimko, Jen Sample, Erin Eckman, and more. The Evolution show is on view all day May 31 at the Mixson Ave. Offices (1081 East Montague Ave. N. Charleston) with artists Phillip Hyman, James Christopher Hill, and Kevin Harrison showing their works. On June 7 from 4-11 p.m., head to the Read Brothers backyard to check out sculptures, music, installations by the Magnet School of the Arts, and a finale with Geoff Cormier and Wayang Modern Puppet Theatre with other artists. COMEDY | Kids’ stuff
The somewhat creepy but completely hilarious Kids in the Hall are back, in a big way. After taking a six-year hiatus from touring, the sketch-comedy troupe is hitting the road again and Charleston is fortunate enough to be among the 30 cities they’re visiting. While KITH might be best known as “those cross-dressing Canadians,” they should not be so one-dimensionally dismissed. Dave Foley, Bruce McColluch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson are hilarious and this tour, titled “Live as We’ll Ever Be,” promises to present them at their best. Favorite characters — like The Kathies and the Headcrusher, perhaps — will reappear in new situations, alongside crazy new creations. The Kids, discovered way back in the ’80s by SNL creator Lorne Michaels, have been making people laugh for a long time. Their unique brand of more social than topical comedy gives their material a longer shelf life than most. The Ginn Tribute hosted by ANNIKA is making its second consecutive appearance at RiverTowne Country Club in Mt. Pleasant this month, and as part of LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam’s farewell tour, it promises to be a memorable event. Last year’s field included all 10 of the top ranked women golfers in the world, and 94 out of the top 100 on the big money list. The 2008 tournament should bring at least as much star power, along with the added emotion surrounding Sorenstam’s impending retirement. Already inducted into the LPGA hall of fame, Sorenstam’s popularity and fan draw will be sorely missed on tour. During her 15-year career, she has redefined women’s golf; singlehandedly raising the level of play, and written herself into the history books as perhaps the best ever. Nicole Castrale will be on hand to defend her title at 2007’s inaugural event, her fist LPGA victory, and one which came in dramatic fashion in a one-hole sudden death playoff against top ranked Lorena Ochoa. —Josh Eboch May 26-June 1.
