Time’s Michael Scherer posts today about a Republican National Committee press conference with Hillary supporter-turned-McCain backer Debra Bartoshevich. In it, Debra was asked about McCain’s pro-life record and she gave a surprising response.

Going back to 1999, John McCain did an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle saying that overturning Roe v. Wade would not make any sense, because then women would have to have illegal abortions.

Michael questions whether she went off-message or if the campaign is trying to assuage both sides on the issue. I think it’s just that these Hillary supporters don’t understand McCain’s record. It’s why the Obama campaign hits “voted with the President 90 percent of the time” line every chance it can get. There’s still a perception out there that McCain is a left-leaning Republican.

Bartoshevich’s comment is a gift the Obama campaign could capitalize on, but heading into the abortion waters can be tricky.
