Mere hours after we were subjected to the worthless “lipstick on a pig” controversy, it appears that South Carolina has been given the next shine in the spotlight. As reported earlier, S.C. Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler told Politico that Sarah Palin’s “primary qualification seems to be that she hasnโt had an abortion.โ
Now we’ve got the state Republicans calling for an apology and at least one right-wing blogger calling for her resignation. It’s like chum in the water for these guys as they read way too much into it.
It was a ridiculous statement, but I’m not sure Fowler was insulting the woman (aside from saying that Palin is unqualified, which we’re sure is not a unique argument). Fowler wasn’t saying that it was bad that Palin had her down syndrome baby, Trig. She was likely simply making note of the fact that this is really all that anyone knows about this woman’s experience (though, we’d add that we’ve heard Palin is also the closest governor to Russia).
Much like Joe Biden’s victory over a speech impediment, this personal stuff doesn’t impress us. Kudos to Sarah Palin for being responsible enough to recognize that a child with special needs is a blessing. But that doesn’t give any indication of how she would be the best person to lead the free world.
But back to Fowler. I’d say her mistake was not expounding on the fact that we haven’t received more information from the McCain campaign on Sarah Palin’s credentials, and so this is what we’re left with.
