In addition to the all-day “Rocktoberfest” going on up in Awendaw today — and the big Number One Contender CD release party (with strings!) at the Music Farm — there are two additional stand-outs on this weekend’s Music Board.

[image-1]At the The Pour House, Shovels & Rope — singer/guitarist Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent (of The Films) — plan to perform a set or two of country/blues ballads, hillbilly classics, and rockabilly songs with special guests. They release their new self-titled album this evening. They recorded it in a house on Folly with drummer/producer Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) at the helm). Charlotte band The Young Sons was originally scheduled to open, but backed out (and reportedly broke up!). Wilmington-based Americana/bluegrass quartet The Barnraisers are stepping in as the warm-up act.

[image-2]Over at the Windjammer, local band Crowfield — pianist Joe Giant and singer/guitarist Tyler “Mountain Man” Mechem, and guests — share thebill with hard-rock power trio Leslie and local strummer Joal Rush. The proximity to Awendaw may pull some of the Awendaw fest-goers to the IOP for this local showcase. The gig is sponsored by The Bridge 105.5, which added the song “Give” to their rotation over the summer.
