The success of the Green Fair, sponsored by the Charleston City Paper, has prompted Charleston Mayor Joe Riley to take what he’s learned and apply it to future festivals.

“The Green Fair’s mission was to create excitement and enthusiasm for green products, services, and technologies available to the residents of the Lowcountry by using environmentally responsible forum of education and entertainment,” reads a city statement.

“The Green Fair recently announced that 95% of the total waste from the festival was composted or recycled. The success of the Charleston Green Fair demonstrates that it is possible to design a festival that is nearly waste-free. The success of the Charleston Green Fair prompted the Mayor to announce plans for developing specific guidelines for future festivals and events in the City of Charleston.”

“With guidelines in place, future festivals in the city will prevent a large amount of waste from going to the landfills.”
