I got word late yesterday that PURE Theatre is filling in its TBA date in January with something it rarely does: a musical. But this isn’t just any musical, if memory serves me correctly. I’m pretty sure that Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years has just two characters in it and is told, or sung rather, backwards. Sure, it will be a crowdpleaser, but, true to PURE Theatre’s nature, it will be a sophisticated and engaging crowdpleaser. By the say, this will be the second Jason Robert Brown musical to be staged in Charleston in the last eight months. Little City Musical Theatre Company, which just wrapped The Rocky Horror Show, put on a spare but intense staging of Brown’s Songs for the New World in April.
